UCF's record got worse each season of Gus Malzahn's tenure at UCF. 9-4 with a bowl win in 2021, 9-5 with a bowl loss in 2022, an "unacceptable" 6-7 in 2023, and lastly a 4-8 in his final season with the Knights - before ultimately joining Mike Norvell's staff at FSU.

Malzahn recently spoke with Warchant.com and discussed his time at UCF. He mentioned that the pressure put on by the fanbase was too much for him, saying that he was set to retire if FSU didn't come calling. He admitted to the job being tougher than he thought, partially due to not receiving the full share of Big 12 money in his two seasons in the conference. He's not wrong about the money, but it is a sorry excuse. Recruiting was never Gus' issue at UCF - it was every other responsibility he had as head coach.
