The Jacksonville Jaguars are trading cornerback Tyson Campbell and a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Browns in exchange for corner Greg Newsome II and a 2026 sixth-round choice, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported late Wednesday night. The swap comes roughly half a year after the Browns traded the 2025 NFL Draft's No. 2 pick to the Jaguars, who promptly selected another cornerback -- and wide receiver -- Travis Hunter.
Campbell was also a high-round pick, plucked in the same draft at No. 33 overall in the second round, just seven slots behind Newsome (No. 26 overall). While Berry drafted Newsome, Campbell was not taken by first-year Jags GM James Gladstone. Newsome is entering the final season of his rookie contract, having had his fifth-year option picked up and due $13.3 million this year. Campbell, however, signed a lofty four-year, $76 million extension in the summer of 2024. He had $13.1 million in guaranteed salary due in 2026, along with a $10.5 million cap number.
In his career with Jacksonville, Campbell, 25, played 60 games (59 starts) with six interceptions, 296 tackles, and 42 pass breakups. Through five starts this season, he has 34 tackles, no interceptions, and six pass breakups. His overall PFF grade is an unflattering 56.6, having been a stellar run defender (87.7 grade) but a liability.1), allowing three touchdowns and 21 receptions on 39 targets, according to in coverage (51 Next Gen Stats.
As for Newsome, his Browns tenure wraps up, having started 47 of 59 games while tallying 178 tackles, three interceptions, and 37 passes defensed. He's been far more consistent, per PFF, garnering a 63.9 overall grade (67.6 run defense; 62.1 coverage). Newsome, targeted 26 times this year, has allowed 16 receptions for 230 yards and no touchdowns, according to Next Gen.
Jaguars get rid of a very familiar face in Jacksonville. The question now is whether this move puts the Jaguars over the edge, or if it's another head-scratcher that we will look back on in a few weeks.
