The Florida faithful got a welcomed glimpse into the program's future on Saturday, as DJ Lagway made his first collegiate start against Samford.
After being named the starter earlier in the week by Coach Napier with Graham Mertz in concussion protocol, the five-star true freshman put on a show, as he should, against the Samford Bulldogs.
Lagway finished the afternoon completing 18/25 passes for 456 yards and three touchdowns, also running for 16 yards on five carries.
Lagway's 456 passing yards were the most in a single game by a Florida freshman quarterback in program history.
The young signal-caller arm talent and athleticism jumped off the screen, completing five passes of 35+ yards and eight passes of 20+.
Lagway's receivers showed out. Eugene Wilson recorded six receptions for 141 yards. Arizona State transfer Elijah Badger recorded three receptions for 123 yards. Aidan Mizell caught a 41-yard touchdown. Chimere Dike caught a 44-yard dart.
While Florida fans should be excited about the program's potential future, remember it's Samford. They should splatter them.
The Gators are back in Ben Hill Griffin next Saturday for a 3:30 EST matchup with Texas A&M.
