The U.S. has set a new record for the most gold medals won at a single World Track and Field Championships.

On Sunday (September 21), the U.S. won three of four relay events at the World Track and Field Championships in Tokyo, finishing the meet with 16 golds overall, the most in history, per NBC Sports.

The U.S. also broke its previous record of 14 gold medals, won at the 2005, 2007, and 2019 World Championships.

“We made history today,” Sha’Carri Richardson, who anchored the women’s 4x100m team to a win over Jamaica by four hundredths of a second, said.

The U.S. also won gold in the men’s 4x100m and women’s 4x400m relays. In the women’s 4x100m, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden became just the second woman ever to sweep the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m at a single Worlds, joining Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Jerfferson-Wooden is also the second American woman to win three golds at a single World Championship, after Allyson Felix in 2007.

The men’s 4x100m team of Christian Coleman, Kenny Bednarek, Courtney Lindsey, and anchor Noah Lyles claimed gold, marking Lyles’ fourth world title in the event.

In the women’s 4x400m, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone anchored a dominant U.S. victory, securing her fifth career world title, tying Jefferson-Wooden and others for second-most among U.S. women. Felix still holds the all-time record with 14.

The U.S. was beaten in the men’s 4x400m, the only relay event they didn’t win. Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi overtook U.S. anchor Rai Benjamin in the final strides, winning by seven hundredths of a second.

Earlier in the day, Cole Hocker added to the medal haul with a win in the 5000m.

The U.S. also led the total medal count with 26 medals, marking the fifth consecutive World Championships where Team USA topped both the gold and overall tallies.
