Walton County, FL - Authorities in Walton County are investigating after a beachgoer discovered approximately $500,000 worth of suspected cocaine that had reportedly washed ashore.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 25 individually wrapped bricks were found on the beach Sunday and have since been seized and entered into evidence.
According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, the packages were wrapped in plastic and marked with images of the cartoon character Yosemite Sam.
Preliminary field tests indicated the contents were cocaine, though further testing is expected as part of the investigation.
Law enforcement has not identified any suspects, and the source of the narcotics remains unknown.
No arrest report has been issued in connection with this case as of the time of publication.
Officials warned members of the public not to handle suspicious packages, advising that drug bundles can pose significant health and safety risks.
“While enjoying our beautiful beaches, if you come across any square groupers, PLEASE call us immediately and DO NOT touch suspicious packages,” the Walton County Sheriff’s Office said in a public advisory.
“The contents could be extremely harmful.”
Incidents involving large quantities of drugs washing ashore are not uncommon in Florida.
In previous years, similar discoveries have been reported in the Florida Keys and along the southeastern coastline.
In 2023, over 70 pounds of cocaine valued at more than $1 million were found along the coast following Hurricane Debby.
As of now, no further details have been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
