The Palm Beach County Commission is meeting for the first time since the longtime County Administrator announced she will be retiring at the end of May.

Verdenia Baker is in charge of the county's $9 billion annual budget and 7,000 fulltime employees for the past ten years.

Commissioners could discuss how to move forward with selecting a replacement for Baker.

The president of the local NAACP branch claims he has learned about an attempt to terminate Baker, something Albert Fields calls "unjust."

County Mayor Maria Marino says that is unlikely to happen and that she would not support such a move. Fellow Republican Commissioner Marci Woodward also told the Palm Beach Post that it would be a mistake to fire Baker.

Among those expressing interest in the Administrator position are County Clerk of Courts and Comptroller Joe Abruzzo as well as Tax Collector Anne Gannon.
