Saturday's in the fall are back and beautiful as ever, but injuries are still a prevalent and unfortunate aspect of the game we love.
The Georgia Bulldogs are beginning SEC play this Saturday with a road matchup against the Kentucky Wildcats under the lights in Lexington.
Let's catch up on some injury updates from Coach Kirby Smart.
Junior tight end Oscar Delp left Saturday's contest against Tennessee Tech after suffering an ankle injury. He recorded one catch for 13 yards and did not return for the second half.
Not to worry for Georgia fans, “Oscar is good. Oscar is fine,” Smart said. If Delp could not play, Lawson Luckie and Benjamin Yurosek will yield those extra snaps. Luckie has made several good plays to start the season, totaling four catches for 80 yards and a 37-yard touchdown.
Yurosek was an off-season acquisition via the transfer portal from Stanford. After three seasons at Stanford, the 6"4, 257-pound senior elected to take his talent to Athens; Yurosek had 42 receptions in 2021, averaging over 15 yards per catch with three touchdowns.
Moving over to defense, the trenches are a factor worth keeping an eye on once again. Warren Brinson, Jordan, Hall, and Xzavier McLeod all missed the Tennessee Tech game (Brinson did dress out).
Nasir Johnson was another player who exited the game on Saturday. Coach Smart stated that Johnson should be okay after suffering what appeared to be a lower-body injury and that he's been dealing with "a little bit of a sublux."
Mykel Williams was seen in a walking boot on Saturday. He suffered an ankle injury during the third quarter of Georgia's win against Clemson.
Coach Smart stated "He’s (Williams) got to be able to practice. He’s got to be able to run ... “He’s got to be able to compete and go run and rehab. He did a good job this weekend of getting extra time in. He’s got to show he can help us win.”
Georgia's injury report process is changing. Starting this Wednesday, the team must release an injury report with the health status of the players discussed above.
The SEC will post one official injury report every day up until 90 minutes before kickoff when the final report is uploaded.
Georgia’s game against Kentucky is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET start on ABC.
