Coughlin and Caldwell Have No Regrets Over Bortles Extension

The Jaguars are officially ushering in a new era in 2019 as they bring in Nick Foles, but this of course comes with the news that they have parted ways with Blake Bortles . After leading the Jaguars to the AFC Championship game in 2017, Bortles headed into 2018 with a contract extension that will now leave the Jags with $16.5 Million in dead cap space. But according to VP of football operations Tom Coughlin and GM Dave Caldwell, extending Bortles was the right move and they have no regrets handicapping their salary cap in 2019 by such a large sum.

Daniel Popper of The Athletic asked Coughlin: "Do you think it was a mistake to base a contract extension off a small sample size, which was the playoffs, versus what he'd done in the four previous seasons?

Coughlin replied, "No. You can throw all the lines in the water you want, you and whoever. I'm not answering that one, and I've settled that one myself mentally. Obviously we feel bad that it didn't work, but remember, it wasn't ass Blake, but something had to be done obviously".
